¿Trabajar o funcionar?
The verb “to work” can be translated in three different ways: trabajar, funcionar and abrir.
The verb trabajar is used only with people:
Juan no trabaja – Juan doesn't work
With objects and abstract nouns we must use the verb funcionar (to function):
Internet Explorer no funciona – Internet Explorer doesn't work
El ascensor funciona mal – The lift works bad / The elevator is malfunctioning
Abrir actually means "to be open". It is used to talk about organizations, exhibitions, museums, cafés, etc.:
Esta tienda no abre hoy – This store doesn't open today
But if your mother is a shop owner, you can say
Mi madre no abre hoy – My mum doesn't work today (doesn’t open the store)
The verb funcionar can mean "to have success", "to have future", and in a negative sentence no funciona can mean that something has broken down:
Creo que nuestra relación no funciona – I think our relationship isn’t working
El diseño de tu página web funciona – The design of your website works
Finally, it should be stated that "to work" meaning “to function" can be translated with the verbs of movement ir, andar, marchar:
El reloj marcha bien – The watch works well
Este ordenador no va – This computer doesn’t work
